Maria Corina Machado, 58, Venezuela’s leading opposition figure, often called the country’s “Iron Lady” has been announced as the winner of the Nobel Peace Prize 2025. Here’s her inspiring story.
The Award
The Nobel Committee honoured Machado for her work to uphold democratic rights and for her struggle to achieve a just and peaceful from transition dictatorship to democracy. The committee praised her as a “brave and committed champion of peace”.
The Nobel Peace Prize has been awarded to 142 Nobel Prize laureates individuals and organisations between 1901 and 2024.



Machado’s Journey
◆ For years, She has been a central figure in Venezuela’s pro- democracy movement. She has faced she has threats, stood up to and President Nicolas Maduro’s arrests, continuous mistreatment. She announced her candidacy in the Presidential Elections 2024, but was blocked from running by the courts. In 2025, Time magazine named her among ‘The 100 Most Influential People’ in the world.
She has three children, two of her children and husband have left Venezuela for safety, while one daughter remains by her side as her strongest support.
The announcement of the award has dashed the hopes of US President Donald Trump, who has been campaigning for the Nobel Peace Prize for himself during the last few months, and even claiming that not awarding him the same would amount to an ‘insult’ to America.
